Erectile dysfunction was a problem that did not have many good treatment options earlier. However, today, a number of treatment options are available for fixing erectile dysfunction. Some of them are enumerated below.
Medication - PDE-5 Inhibitors: These are pharmacological medications that include sildenafil citrate (Viagra), vardenefil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis). They are taken orally. They act by blocking the action of phosphodiesterase type 5. This causes the enzyme cyclic guanosine phosphate (cGMP) to degrade (breakdown). Cyclic guanosine monophosphate causes relaxation of the smooth penile shaft muscle. This causes the penile corpus cavernosum to become engorged with blood.
All these three medications are effective and safe for use by normal men, who are not using any medication for the heart, especially nitroglycerin. They require sexual stimulation to have an effect. Further they cannot be called a failure after a single use. They need to be used multiple times if their effect is to be seen.
However, in some people, a drop in blood pressure has been observed, due to which they may suffer from light headedness or dizziness. Therefore, as a precaution, a four hour separation must be maintained between the administration of sildenafil citrate (when taken in a high dose) and alpha blockers. These drugs are mainstream drugs for resolution of erectile dysfunction. However, they have certain side effects. These include headaches, flushing, indigestion, abnormal vision, back pain, or pain in a limb. Apomorphine (Uprima) is a drug for erectile dysfunction in tablet form. They dissolve under the tongue. Apomorphine acts by stimulating dopamine in the brain. Dopamine heightens sexual sensations and interest. Some people in the US became unconscious after taking apomorphine tablets. As such the release of this ED drug has been kept on hold there. However, this drug is available in Europe. Apomorphine in nasal spray form is currently undergoing clinical trials. Prostaglandin-E cream: This medication is in the line of creams applied locally to the glans penis and urethral opening. It has been found through studies to be effective in many patients. As it is applied on the penis and not taken orally it has advantages over oral medications. It acts by increasing blood flow to the urethra. Vacuum erection devices: They basically consist of a vacuum pump. A cylinder is placed over the penis and a seal is created by use of a lubricant. Vacuum is created in the cylinder through use of a pump. The vacuum so created in the cylinder helps draw blood into the penis. A rubber band (or ring) is used to trap blood inside the penis. Such devices are used especially after prostate cancer surgery. Many people find them useful in achieving an erection. Some others find it cumbersome to use. Besides these treatments, there are various other treatments for fixing erectile dysfunction. These include surgery, penile implants, herbs such as Asian ginseng and Gingko biloba, and testosterone injections.
